What a month of talks it's been—Mindset Unlimited, Elevate, SME Xpo, Wellnergy, Better Man, Foundxrs, The Groucho Club—and there's one hormone that's cropped up in every Q&A: Cortisol. “What’s the best way to bring it down?” It’s a good question. But here’s the better one: When should you bring it down?
What a month of talks it's been—Mindset Unlimited, Elevate, SME Xpo, Wellnergy, Better Man, Foundxrs, The Groucho Club—and there's one hormone that's cropped up in every Q&A: Cortisol. The number one question? “What’s the best way to bring it down?” It’s a good question. But here’s the better one: When should you bring it down? Let’s unpack it .
Where insight becomes impact
What I’ve been looking at this week…
Cortisol isn’t just your stress hormone—it’s your start-up hormone. Your get-up-and-go. Your biological caffeine. And it’s powered by something called the Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR). That’s the spike your body gives you within 30 minutes of waking up—like turning the ignition key and revving the engine. A healthy CAR = a 50% rise in cortisol from waking to 30 minutes later. Here’s what I see in clinic:
Ideal CAR: 7.00 → 10.5 µg/dL (+50%)
Blunted CAR: 7.00 → 8.25 µg/dL (+18%) = burnout, brain fog, immune dips
Spiking CAR: 4.25 → 9.5 µg/dL (+124%) = you’re waking like there’s a tiger in your kitchen
So when someone asks, “Should I meditate in the morning?” I say: It depends on your cortisol curve.
Morning Meditation is a common practice people turn to. But you wouldn't slam the brakes on a car that's barely started would you?
A meta-analysis of 58 RCT showed mindfulness and meditation have the biggest effect on… drumroll… the morning cortisol spike. So yes—meditation can help lower cortisol. But that's only helpful if you're using it at the right time.
Track it to hack it.
What I’ve been monitoring this week… These are my go-to tools when prescribing clarity with precision:
Sensate — my favourite vagus nerve co-pilot: silent, soothing, and serious about switching gears
Apollo Neuro — touch therapy on your wrist to switch from rev to relax
Oura — to track HRV and see whether your engine’s running smoothly or stalling
And the key? I might have mentioned it already... Timing
From knowing to doing.
What this means for YOU…
Here’s what many high-performers get wrong: They meditate the moment they wake up—thinking it’s universally helpful. But here’s the nuance:
🚙 If your CAR is too low, meditating immediately can suppress it further. That’s like tapping the brake before the engine’s even turned over— which means you might feel groggy, low, or emotionally flatlined all morning. Do that every day, and it compounds: fatigue, low drive, even poor immunity.
🏎️ If your CAR is too high, meditating within 30 minutes of waking is golden. You’re easing the surge and putting your system into smooth cruise— which means more clarity, steadier energy, and less of that wired-tired feeling.
That’s why I never guess. I test. A 24-hour cortisol profile shows your curve. And your optimal timing window.
💼 Case in point One of my clients—a high-performing founder in fintech—was meditating religiously as soon as he woke up at 6am. But by 10am? Anxious. Worn out. We ran his cortisol test. 📈 CAR spike: 124%. We: ✔ Delayed meditation by 30 minutes ✔ Added Sensate vagal activation after meetings ✔ Tweaked his evening wind-down with light and magnesium Six weeks later? CAR down 28%. HRV up. “For the first time in months,” he said, “I feel like I’m in the right gear”
That’s the power of precision timing.

Where you’ll find me…
This week: A week of consults. That includes reviewing six client CAR results. Three are elevated, two are blunted, one hasn’t risen at all. Each is going to get a different bespoke protocol.
A thought to pause on…
“Cortisol is your ignition. Meditation is your brake. Know when to slow down... and when to change lanes.”
So here’s my question to you: What’s your morning engine doing? Flooding, failing—or firing just right? If you don’t know… let’s test it. Book your CAR test and we’ll time your calm to your curve—with precision.
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead! Dr Alka
