Types of Rest

Happy November! October's been quite the whirlwind ... which is why I’ve been thinking about rest this week. Not the kind that happens when you finally collapse at night, but the kind that happens in the micro-moments of your day. Micro-rest. And here’s the truth most people miss: Most people treat exhaustion like achievement. Yet it’s recovery that determines resilience. Healthspan expands not by doing more - but by restoring more deeply. Let’s dive in.

Data

Where insight becomes impact

What I’ve been looking at this week…

We talk about sleep as if it’s the only form of rest. But the research now shows that rest is multi-dimensional - it’s not just a break from doing; it’s a biological process that restores the three core systems of life: Body, Brain, and Being.

Micro-rest is the art of recovery in real time - short recovery moments woven through your day; moments where you interrupt constant stimulation to restore physiological balance. This can last as little as seven seconds to two minutes, yet the impact is profound, regulating your rhythm, restoring your readiness, and recharging your resilience.

There are 3 layers of micro-rest we need:

1. Body Rest - Your Cellular Reset Your body never truly stops. Even at rest, 37 trillion cells are repairing, replacing, and regenerating. Micro-rest allows mitochondria, your cellular batteries, to restore ATP, the molecule that fuels all activity.

When you keep pushing without pause, you create cellular debt: excess oxidative stress, higher cortisol, lower nitric oxide. Over time, this accelerates telomere shortening, a biological marker of ageing.

A cornerstone study from the University of California, San Francisco (PMID 15574496) found that chronic stress and poor recovery habits can shorten telomeres by up to 10 years of biological age.

That’s a decade lost- not from disease, but from depletion.

Micro-rest reduces sympathetic drive, lowers inflammation, and restores oxidative balance. This is how micro-rest preserves cellular youth. 2. Brain Rest - Your Cognitive Cleanse Every thought, every task, every notification burns glucose.Your brain consumes about 20% of your body’s total energy, and unlike muscles, it doesn’t store any. When it’s overworked, metabolic waste, especially beta-amyloid, builds up. That’s the same protein linked to cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease.

Studies from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke first showed that the brain’s glymphatic system - its internal drainage network- is most active during deep sleep, when cerebrospinal fluid clears beta-amyloid. Later research has found that this system doesn’t shut down entirely whilst you're awake - it remains active during quiet, low-arousal states such as meditation, breathflow, and micro-rest (PMID: 30801033).

So rest, therefore, isn’t “doing nothing.” It’s neuronal housekeeping.

Those short mental pauses you dismiss as distractions? They’re moments of detox for your brain; brief windows where your neurons quite literally rinse and reset.

3. Being Rest - Your Emotional Equilibrium This is the most overlooked layer: rest for your identity, emotions, and nervous system. Being rest restores heart–brain coherence. That's the synchrony between your emotional and physiological states.

Research from the HeartMath Institute shows that even 60 seconds of slow breathing or gratitude increases HRV, stabilises cortisol, and enhances DHEA, your body’s resilience hormone.(PMID: 19754863)

Rest here isn’t about sleep or stillness; it’s about safety.

When your nervous system feels safe, your body can heal. And from an evolutionary perspective, that safety state is where longevity lives.

Devices

Track it to hack it.

What I’ve been monitoring this week…

Technology is often blamed for fatigue, but the right kind of tech can actually teach you how to rest. It transforms something abstract, like recovery, into something you can see, feel, and measure. And when you can measure it, you can modify it.

Body Rest Devices like Oura and Whoop translate your recovery status into data - HRV trends, resting heart rate, and temperature shifts. A drop in HRV or rise in temperature after a long day signals sympathetic dominance, your body’s “doing mode.” But even a 60-second breathing break or posture reset can trigger micro-recovery: within minutes, HRV steadies, temperature stabilises, and parasympathetic tone rises.

Brain Rest The Muse EEG headband provides a window into your brain’s electrical language. When you shift from beta waves (analytical, alert) to alpha and theta (creative, relaxed), the device translates this transition into audible feedback - a real-time reminder that your mind is settling. Even one minute of micro-rest can show measurable change: beta activity drops, alpha rises, cognitive flexibility returns.

Being Rest Devices like Sensate and Apollo Neuro support your nervous system directly. By using infrasonic or vibrational frequencies over the chest or wrist, they stimulate the vagus nerve, increasing HRV and lowering heart rate within 90 seconds. The result is measurable calm - not imagined.

Micro-rest, when tracked, becomes visible - and what’s visible becomes actionable. My approach is always to blend innate intuition with transformative technology. It’s not about outsourcing your intuition to technology. It’s about using devices to tune it back in.

Decisions

From knowing to doing.

What this means for YOU…

When you micro-rest, you don’t stop, you R.E.C.H.A.R.G.E. Here’s how to turn micro-rest into momentum:

For the Body R- Release: Let go of physical tension. Your muscles are messengers - stretch, yawn, or unclench. Do the 5-50: 5 stretches through the day that last 50 seconds. E - Exhale: Long, slow breaths activate your parasympathetic system. Do the 6-60: slow your breathing to six breaths a minute every 60 minutes.

For the Brain C - Clear: Reduce visual and auditory clutter. Silence notifications, Gaze out of a window for 20 seconds every 20 minutes between emails and let your mind wander. H - Hibernate: Protect pure micro-rest windows. Do the 7-70: 7 seconds of silence every 70 minutes to give your brain space from noise. A - Align: Reconnect your actions to purpose. Do the 1-10; step outside for one minute and take ten seconds to state your intention for the day. Remind yourself why before what.

For the Being R - Reconnect: With gratitude. Micro-moments of appreciation raise oxytocin and restore trust - in yourself and others. G- Ground: Step away from problem-solving and step into nature. E — Evolve: Use micro-rest as reflection. When you pause, you create the space your next level needs to emerge.

💼 Case in point: A CEO client of mine tracked his HRV for a month. His lowest recovery scores came on the days

he “powered through.” Once we added 60-second breathflow breaks and 10-minute silent walks,

his HRV rose 15 points.

He didn’t work fewer hours - just fewer unrecovered ones.
